The 2026 college football season will officially begin on Thursday, August 27, with a three-day Week Zero schedule featuring games across the United States and an international matchup in Dublin. Most Division I programs will begin their seasons the following week, but Week Zero offers fans an early look at new coaches, quarterbacks and rebuilt rosters.
Thursday’s schedule is largely focused on Football Championship Subdivision programs. Mercyhurst visits Youngstown State at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN+, while Maine plays Towson at the same time. Other games include Chattanooga at West Georgia, Charleston Southern at Lindenwood, Southern Illinois at West Florida and Central Arkansas at UT Martin.
Friday’s games include Marist at New Haven, Colgate at Fordham, New Hampshire at UAlbany and Idaho at Cal Poly. These matchups provide early opportunities for smaller programs to gain national attention before the crowded Labor Day weekend schedule begins.
The most prominent Week Zero game will take place Saturday, August 29, when North Carolina faces TCU in Dublin, Ireland. The Aer Lingus College Football Classic is scheduled for noon ET on ESPN. International games have become an important part of college football’s opening weekend, offering universities national exposure and creating a bowl-like atmosphere before the regular season fully begins.
The North Carolina-TCU matchup carries significant interest because both programs will be attempting to establish their identities immediately. Early-season games between major-conference opponents often have postseason implications, particularly as strength of schedule becomes important in College Football Playoff discussions.
Another major matchup features San José State at USC at 3 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. USC will enter the season under immediate pressure to demonstrate improvement, while San José State has the opportunity to create one of the opening weekend’s biggest surprises.
Jacksonville State will visit North Dakota State at 5:30 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network. North Dakota State’s history of success against top competition makes this a particularly interesting test. Later, New Mexico State plays Florida State at 7 p.m. ET on The CW, while Memphis visits UNLV at 10 p.m. ET on Fox.
Other Saturday games include Hawaii at Stanford on ACC Network and Sacramento State at Eastern Michigan on ESPN+. The MEAC/SWAC Challenge between Alabama A&M and Howard will be televised nationally on ABC at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Week Zero is important for more than results. Coaches will evaluate new offensive systems, transfer players and inexperienced quarterbacks under real-game pressure. Teams must also manage travel, early-season conditioning and roster depth before conference schedules begin.
The opening weekend will not contain the season’s largest collection of ranked matchups, but it will establish the first narratives of the 2026 campaign. A major upset could immediately change expectations, while a convincing performance could give a team valuable momentum heading into September.
