General

Is Gauge free to use?

Yes. Every calculator on this page is free, with no account, no sign-up, and no usage limit. There's no premium tier hiding behind it.

Do I need to create an account to use any of the calculators?

No account of any kind. There's no login, no email capture, and nothing to set up — open the page and every calculator is ready to use immediately.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes. The whole page is built to work on a phone screen, from the BMI calculator to the tool tabs to the FAQ. Nothing here only works on desktop.

Which browsers does Gauge work in?

Any modern browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and their mobile equivalents. It uses standard JavaScript and CSS with no plugins.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Once the page has loaded, every calculation runs locally in your browser. You'd only need a connection again to reload the page or fetch its fonts.

Does Gauge support currencies other than the ones listed?

The mortgage and percentage calculators include 158 world currencies, covering all major and most regional currencies. If yours genuinely isn't listed, the plain number still works — just note the currency yourself.

Privacy

Is my data saved or uploaded anywhere?

No. Every calculation happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type — height, weight, income, home price — is sent to a server, stored, or logged.

Do you track what I calculate?

No. There's no analytics tied to your inputs, and no record kept of what numbers you enter or what results you get.

Is this safe to use for sensitive financial numbers?

Since nothing leaves your browser, entering a home price, income figure, or loan amount here carries the same exposure as doing the math in a notes app on your own device.

Do you use cookies or analytics?

The page itself doesn't set cookies to track your calculator inputs. It doesn't require any consent banner because it isn't collecting personal data from what you type.

Can I trust the health information here as medical advice?

No — BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. Treat the category and range as a starting point, and talk to a doctor about anything specific to your health.

BMI

What is BMI and how is it calculated?

Body mass index (BMI) compares your weight to your height. It's calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, or 703 × weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared.

What is considered a healthy BMI range?

For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is classed as a healthy weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classed as obese.

Is BMI calculated differently for men and women?

No, the formula is the same for everyone. But because men typically carry more muscle mass, BMI can read slightly high for muscular men and doesn't fully reflect body composition for either sex.

Does BMI account for muscle mass or body frame?

No. BMI only uses height and weight, so it can't tell muscle from fat. A muscular, athletic person can show a high BMI despite having low body fat — treat it as a starting point, not a diagnosis.

Can I use this for children or teenagers?

This calculator is built for adults. Kids and teens are still growing, so their healthy range depends on age and sex and is usually read from a growth-chart percentile instead of the fixed adult categories used here.

What does an overweight or obese result mean?

It means your weight-to-height ratio sits above the range linked to lower health risk in most studies. It's a screening signal, not a diagnosis — a doctor can weigh in your full picture before drawing conclusions.

How often should I check my BMI?

There's no fixed rule — many people check every few months rather than daily, since short-term water and food shifts can move the number without reflecting a real change in body fat.

Can I switch between metric and imperial units?

Yes. Height can be entered in centimeters, feet & inches, or meters, and weight in kilograms, pounds, or stone — independently of each other.

Why do my height and weight units work independently of each other?

Some people naturally think of their height in feet and inches but their weight in kilograms, or vice versa. Letting the two units move independently means you never have to convert a number in your head first.

Mortgage

How is a monthly mortgage payment calculated?

The standard formula is M = P × r(1+r)ⁿ ÷ ((1+r)ⁿ − 1), where P is the loan amount after your down payment, r is your monthly interest rate, and n is the total number of monthly payments.

What's included besides principal and interest?

Many homeowners also pay property taxes, home insurance, and sometimes HOA dues or PMI. Toggle "Add taxes, insurance & HOA" above to see the fuller monthly total.

How much should I put down on a house?

A bigger down payment lowers your loan amount, monthly payment and total interest, and can help you avoid PMI on conventional loans. 20% is a common benchmark, but many programs allow less.

How does the interest rate affect my payment?

Even a small rate change has a big effect over 15 or 30 years, since interest compounds monthly. A higher rate raises both your monthly payment and the total interest paid over the loan.

What is amortization and how does it work?

It's the schedule by which your loan is paid off. Early payments go mostly toward interest, and later payments go mostly toward principal, even though the total monthly payment doesn't change.

Should I choose a 15-year or 30-year term?

A 15-year term means a higher monthly payment but far less total interest and a faster payoff. A 30-year term keeps payments lower and more manageable, at the cost of more interest overall.

Does this include PMI or lender fees?

No. It calculates principal and interest plus any taxes, insurance and HOA you enter manually — it doesn't include lender fees, closing costs, discount points or private mortgage insurance.

How much house can I actually afford?

A common guideline keeps total monthly housing cost at or below roughly 28% of gross monthly income, but your comfortable number also depends on other debts, savings goals and local cost of living.

Can I calculate a mortgage in a currency other than US dollars?

Yes — the currency dropdown covers 158 currencies. Every figure on the mortgage calculator updates to show that currency's symbol.

Does changing the currency convert the amount, or just the symbol?

Just the symbol. The currency selector doesn't apply a live exchange rate — it's meant for entering figures that are already in your local currency, not converting between currencies.

Percentage

How do you calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100, then multiply by the number. 15% of 240 is (15 ÷ 100) × 240, which equals 36.

How do you find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the first number by the second, then multiply by 100. To find what percentage 36 is of 240, calculate (36 ÷ 240) × 100, which equals 15%.

How do you calculate percentage increase or decrease?

Subtract the original number from the new number, divide by the original number, then multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease.

Percentage change vs. percentage points — what's the difference?

Percentage change measures relative movement (20 to 25 is a 25% increase), while percentage points measure the raw gap between two percentages (20% to 25% is a 5 percentage point rise).

How do you calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to find the amount saved, then subtract that from the price. A 20% discount on $50 saves $10, for a final price of $40.

Can percentages be negative?

Yes — a negative percentage usually represents a decrease. A change from 100 to 80 is a −20% change, showing a drop rather than a gain.

Can I use a currency with the percentage calculator?

Yes, it's optional. Pick a currency and, in "X% of Y" mode, the amount and result show that currency's symbol — useful for tips, discounts, or commission on a price.

Tips

What's a quick way to sanity-check a BMI result?

Compare it against the healthy weight range shown below the BMI number — if your actual weight sits inside that range, your BMI will land in the healthy category, which is a fast way to double-check the math.

How can I compare two mortgage scenarios, like different down payments?

Run the calculator once, note the monthly payment and total interest, then change just the down payment and run it again. Comparing the two "Total interest" figures shows exactly what a bigger down payment saves you.

Is there a faster way to compute a tip using the percentage tool?

Use "X% of Y" mode with the tip percentage as X and the bill total as Y — an 18% tip on a $64 bill is 18% of 64.

Can I compute a reverse percentage, like the original price before a discount?

Use "X is what % of Y" with the sale price as X and a trial original price as Y, and adjust Y until the result reads 100 minus the discount percentage — a couple of tries gets you there quickly.

What's the fastest way to switch between calculators?

Use the Mortgage / Percentage tabs in the "More calculators on the bench" section — no page reload, and whatever you've typed in the other calculator stays put while you're away from it.
