General
Is this PDF to Word converter free?
Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit and no paid version. The conversion runs in your own browser, so there are no server costs to pass on to you.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Open the page, add your PDF and download the Word file. Nothing to register, nothing to install.
How do I convert a PDF to Word?
Drop your PDF onto the upload box, or click Choose PDF files. Your file appears in the box with its page count. Choose Editable text or Exact look, press Convert to Word, then click Download .docx when it's ready. The Word file keeps the name of your PDF.
Can I download a file I converted earlier?
Yes. Your last 30 converted files are listed under Your recent conversions, below the converter. Click Download next to any of them, even after closing and reopening the page, as long as you use the same browser on the same device.
Can I convert several PDFs at once?
Yes. Select or drop several PDFs together, or use Add more to include others. They all appear in the box; press Convert once and they are converted one after another. Each file gets its own Download .docx button as soon as it's ready, and you can remove any file before converting.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. It works on Android phones, iPhones and tablets, as well as Windows, Mac and Linux computers. On phones, very large scanned PDFs may convert more slowly because phones have less memory.
Which browsers does it work in?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. If something doesn't work, update your browser first; very old browsers can't run the conversion engine.
Is there a file size or page limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, very large files depend on how much memory your device has. Regular PDFs with hundreds of pages convert in seconds; scanned PDFs take a few seconds per page.
Does it work without an internet connection?
You need a connection to load the page. The text recognition engine and its language files are also downloaded the first time you convert a scan, and your browser usually keeps them for later. Your PDF itself is never sent over the connection.
Privacy
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your PDF is opened and converted entirely inside your browser, on your own device. The page downloads its conversion tools from public code libraries, but your document is never sent anywhere.
Do you keep a copy of my documents?
No. The converter has no server to keep anything on. Your converted Word files are listed under Your recent conversions, but that list is stored only in your own browser on your device. Nobody else can see it, and you can remove files one by one or clear the whole list at any time.
Where is my conversion history saved?
In your browser's own storage on the device you used, not online. That means it won't appear on your other devices, and it is removed if you clear your browser data. Some private or incognito windows don't allow saving, so the list only lasts until you close the page.
Is it safe for confidential documents?
Yes. Because nothing is uploaded, it is well suited to contracts, bank statements, payslips, IDs and medical reports. As with any file, keep the downloaded Word document somewhere private.
What does the page download from the internet?
Only the tools it needs: a PDF reader (pdf.js), a Word file builder (docx) and, for scanned pages, the Tesseract text recognition engine with the language you selected. They come from the public cdnjs and jsDelivr libraries.
Can I trust the converted text for medical, legal or financial use?
Text from regular PDFs is copied exactly. Text read from scans by OCR can contain mistakes, so always check names, numbers, dates, amounts and test results against the original before you rely on them.
Scanned PDFs & OCR
Can it convert scanned PDFs into editable text?
Yes. Every page is checked automatically. If a page is a scan or a photo, it goes through OCR (optical character recognition), which reads the letters from the image and turns them into real, editable text in Word. You don't need to switch anything on.
What is OCR?
OCR stands for optical character recognition. It looks at a picture of a page, finds the letters and words, and turns them into text you can edit, search and copy.
How does the tool know a page is scanned?
It looks at what is actually on each page, not only at how much text it has. A page is treated as a scan when it has little or no text, when a large picture covers most of it, when scanning software has added an invisible text layer, or when its text is garbled. This catches scans with a small watermark such as "Scanned with CamScanner".
Which languages can it read?
English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Turkish, Indonesian, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese and Korean. Pick your document's language under More options before converting. English is the default.
How accurate is the text recognition?
On clear, typed documents it is usually very accurate. Accuracy drops with blurry or low-resolution scans, photos taken at an angle, very small print, stamps and text over coloured backgrounds. Logos and decorative marks are filtered out on purpose.
Can it read handwriting?
Not reliably. The text recognition is designed for printed and typed text. Neat block capitals sometimes work, but joined-up handwriting usually doesn't. For handwritten pages, use Exact look to keep them as images.
Does it keep bold text and headings from scans?
Yes, as far as possible. Bold text is detected from how thick the letter strokes are, and larger lines become headings. Paragraphs are rebuilt from the position of each line on the page.
A PDF has some normal pages and some scanned pages. Will it work?
Yes. Each page is handled on its own: normal pages are converted directly, and only the scanned ones go through OCR.
What does "Run text recognition on every page" do?
It sends every page through OCR, even pages that already contain text. Use it when a PDF's text comes out messy or in strange characters, or when a scan slips past the automatic detection. It is slower, so leave it off for regular PDFs.
Formatting
What is the difference between Editable text and Exact look?
Editable text rebuilds your document as real Word content you can edit: paragraphs, headings, bold, italic and bullet points. Exact look places each page in Word as a picture, so it looks identical to the PDF but the text can't be edited. Use Exact look for forms, certificates and designed pages.
Will my formatting be preserved?
Editable text keeps paragraphs, headings (based on font size), bold and italic text, bullet points, centred lines, page breaks, the page size and, where possible, the original font.
Are tables kept?
Not as Word tables yet. Table contents come through as text, row by row. If the table layout matters, use Exact look, or rebuild the table in Word with Insert › Table › Convert Text to Table.
Are pictures and logos kept?
In Editable text, pictures inside text pages are left out so you get clean, editable text. Exact look keeps everything, pictures included, because each page becomes an image.
What happens to multi-column layouts?
Columns are read across the page, so text from side-by-side columns can be joined on the same line. For newspapers, brochures and two-column papers, check the order after converting, or use Exact look.
Are links and headers or footers kept?
Link text is kept, but links are not clickable in Word. Headers, footers and page numbers come through as ordinary lines of text, which you can delete or move into Word's header and footer.
Which programs can open the converted file?
The download is a standard .docx file. It opens in Microsoft Word 2007 and later (Windows and Mac), Word for the web, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages and WPS Office.
Troubleshooting
Why does my Word file show a picture instead of text?
Either Exact look was selected, or a scanned page had no readable text, such as a photo, a drawing or a very poor scan. The message under the file name tells you which pages were affected. Try a clearer scan, check the scan language under More options, or tick Run text recognition on every page and convert again.
Why is the text full of strange characters?
Some PDFs use fonts that don't map back to normal letters, so the copied text comes out as symbols. Open More options, tick Run text recognition on every page and convert again; reading the page as an image fixes this.
It says "This file couldn't be read". What now?
The file is damaged, incomplete or not really a PDF (for example a renamed image). Try opening it in a PDF reader; if it opens there, save or print it to a new PDF and convert that copy.
Can I convert password-protected PDFs?
Not directly. If a PDF needs a password to open, remove the password first by opening it in your PDF reader and saving an unprotected copy, then convert the copy. PDFs that open without a password but block copying usually convert normally.
Why is the conversion slow or stuck?
Scanned pages take the longest because each one is read by OCR, and the first scan also loads the recognition engine. If nothing changes for a long time, check your internet connection, refresh the page and try again, or try a smaller file.
I clicked Download but nothing saved. Where is my file?
Check your browser's downloads list. On iPhone and iPad, files go to the Files app under Downloads. If your browser asks whether to allow downloads from this site, choose Allow.
Tips
How do I get the best results from a scan?
Scan at 300 dpi if you can, keep the page flat and straight, and use good, even light. A sharp photo taken straight above the page works better than a tilted one. Black text on white paper gives the most accurate results.
Should I pick the language before converting a scan?
Yes. Choose the document's language under More options first. Reading French text with English selected, for example, makes accented letters and some words come out wrong.
What's the quickest way to check a converted document?
Open the PDF and the Word file side by side and compare the numbers, names and dates first; these matter most and are where OCR mistakes would hurt. Then skim headings and paragraph breaks.
How do I turn the converted text into a proper table in Word?
Select the lines that belong to the table, then go to Insert › Table › Convert Text to Table and choose the separator. Adjust column widths afterwards.
Can I edit the result in Google Docs?
Yes. Upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs. Formatting such as headings, bold and paragraphs carries over.
