What can you do with the image editor?

You can crop, resize, rotate and straighten; fix exposure, contrast and colour; apply filters and effects; remove and replace backgrounds; add text, shapes, icons and stickers; draw; work with layers; enhance, denoise and upscale; batch process many images; and export in five formats.

Crop, rotate, flip and straighten

Free or fixed-ratio cropping (1:1, 4:5, 16:9 and more), 90° rotation, mirror flips and a straighten slider that hides empty corners automatically.

Resize and canvas size

Change width and height in pixels or percent with the aspect ratio locked. Resampling uses a Lanczos-3 filter for sharp, alias-free results. Canvas size adds padding without stretching.

Light and colour adjustments

Exposure, brightness, contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation, vibrance, temperature, tint, hue and per-channel colour balance, all non-destructive and editable at any time.

Photo filters and presets

Sixteen looks such as Vivid, Golden, Vintage, Noir and Matte with a strength slider, plus your own saved presets. Effects include blur, vignette, grain, fade, grayscale and sepia.

Background remover

Remove plain or evenly coloured backgrounds in one click, then refine with the magic eraser, erase brush and restore brush. Replace the background with a colour, transparency or another photo.

Text, shapes, icons and stickers

Editable text with 11 fonts, outline, shadow and highlight box; rectangles, ellipses, stars, arrows and speech bubbles; icons, emoji stickers, colour and gradient overlays, and borders with rounded corners.

Drawing tools

Brush, eraser, restore brush and colour picker with adjustable size, hardness, opacity and colour. Strokes go on their own layer, so the photo underneath stays untouched.

Layers

Add, reorder (drag or buttons), duplicate, hide, lock, rename, merge and delete layers, each with its own opacity and 16 blend modes.

Photo enhancer

Auto enhance and auto colour correct dull or colour-cast photos, reduce noise with an edge-preserving filter, sharpen, and upscale 2× or 4× with classical resampling.

Export in any common format

JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF (where your browser supports it) and BMP, with a quality slider, custom output size, live file-size estimate and copy-to-clipboard.

Batch processing

Resize, compress, convert, rotate and apply basic edits to up to 200 images at once, then download them individually or as a single ZIP file.

Social media sizes

One-click crop and resize for Instagram posts, portraits and stories, Facebook covers, YouTube thumbnails, LinkedIn banners, X headers, Pinterest pins and more.

How does the background remover work?

Press Remove background and the editor detects the colour around the edges of your photo, then makes every connected pixel of that colour transparent with a softened edge. It runs on your device without AI, so it is fast and private and works best on plain, studio or evenly coloured backgrounds.

  • Tolerance sets how different a colour can be from the background and still be removed. Raise it for shadows and gradients; lower it if parts of your subject disappear.
  • Edge softness feathers the cut-out edge so it blends naturally on a new background.
  • Magic eraser removes any area you click, either only the connected region or every matching colour in the image.
  • Erase and restore brushes fix the details by hand: restore paints back the original pixels.
  • Replace the background with transparency, a solid colour or another photo, then export as PNG or WebP to keep transparency.

Busy outdoor backgrounds, hair and fur are hard for colour-based removal. AI subject detection would handle them better, but it needs a large model download or a server and is not part of this free, on-device tool.

What size should images be for social media?

Common upload sizes are 1080×1080 for an Instagram square post, 1080×1350 for an Instagram portrait, 1080×1920 for stories and reels, 1200×630 for Facebook and link previews, 1280×720 for YouTube thumbnails and 1200×627 for LinkedIn posts. The editor crops and resizes to these in one step.

Which image format should you download?

Choose JPG or WebP for photos, PNG for graphics, screenshots and transparent images, and AVIF for the smallest files in browsers that support it. A quality setting of 85–92% keeps photos looking original at a fraction of the size.

FormatCompressionTransparencyBest for

Is the online image editor private and safe?

Yes. Every tool runs inside your browser, so your photos are never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone else. Downloads contain only the image pixels, without EXIF or GPS location data, and files are checked by their real contents before they are opened.

What runs on your device, and what is not included

CapabilityHow it works here
All editing, filters, layers, export and batchOn your device, using the browser's canvas and a background worker thread. No server.
Background removalOn your device, colour-based (edge colour detection, flood fill, feathered matte). Not AI.
Auto enhance, noise reduction, sharpeningOn your device, using classical image-processing algorithms (auto levels, edge-preserving smoothing, unsharp mask).
UpscalingOn your device with Lanczos-3 interpolation and sharpening. Does not invent new detail.
AI subject detection, AI super-resolution, generative fillNot offered. These need large machine-learning models or server processing, which would conflict with the no-upload design.

Tips for better photo edits

Crop and straighten first, fix exposure and white balance next, then add filters and text last. Zoom to 100% before sharpening or removing noise, and keep your edits subtle: small changes to contrast and saturation usually look more natural than big ones.

  • Work in order: crop and straighten, then light (exposure, highlights, shadows), then colour (temperature, saturation), then effects.
  • Use Compare often: the before-and-after slider shows when an edit has gone too far.
  • Text readability: add a thin outline or a highlight box when text sits over a busy photo.
  • Transparent logos: remove the background, then export as PNG or WebP rather than JPG.
  • Smaller files: resize to the size you actually need before lowering quality. A 1080 px wide image at 85% is ideal for most social posts.

Key image editing terms

Short definitions of the ideas behind the tools.

Non-destructive editing
Edits that are stored as settings and applied when the image is drawn, so they can be changed or removed later without losing the original pixels. Adjustments, filters and resizing work this way here.
Aspect ratio
The proportion between an image's width and height, such as 1:1 for a square or 16:9 for widescreen. Cropping to a fixed ratio keeps the shape a platform expects.
Lossy and lossless compression
Lossy formats (JPG, WebP, AVIF) discard detail you are unlikely to notice to make files much smaller. Lossless formats (PNG, BMP) keep every pixel exactly.
Alpha channel (transparency)
Extra information stored with each pixel that says how see-through it is. PNG, WebP and AVIF keep it; JPG does not.
Resampling (Lanczos)
Recalculating pixels when an image changes size. Lanczos is a high-quality filter that keeps edges sharp and avoids jagged or shimmering patterns.
Blend mode
The rule for mixing a layer with the layers below it, such as Multiply to darken or Screen to lighten.
EXIF metadata
Information that cameras and phones save inside photos, such as the camera model, date and sometimes GPS location. Downloads from this editor do not include it.

About the image editor

Who makes it, how it works and its known limits.

Who made it

The image editor is designed and maintained by Entertainment Couch, which also publishes free online tools and browser games. It was last updated on .

How it works

  • Images are decoded by your browser after their real file type and dimensions are checked from the file contents.
  • Adjustments and filters are stored as settings and previewed on a reduced copy for speed; heavy processing runs in a background worker so the page stays responsive.
  • When you export, every edit is applied again to the full-resolution original, and resizing uses a Lanczos-3 filter.
  • Undo history keeps up to 60 steps and drops the oldest steps automatically if it would use too much memory.

Known limits

  • Background removal is colour-based, not AI, so complex backgrounds need manual touch-ups.
  • Images are edited in 8-bit sRGB colour. Wide-gamut and 16-bit photos are converted when opened, and RAW camera files are not supported.
  • Animated GIF and WebP files open as their first frame. Exports are single still images.
  • Your work is not saved automatically: export before closing the tab.

General

What is the Entertainment Couch image editor?

It is a free online photo editor that runs entirely in your web browser. You can crop, resize, rotate, adjust colours, apply filters, remove simple backgrounds, add text, shapes and stickers, draw, work with layers, enhance photos, batch process many images and download the result as JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or BMP.

Is the image editor really free?

Yes. Every tool is free with no limit on the number of images or downloads. There is no premium version, no subscription, no hidden charges and no watermark on your images.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. There is no account, login or email, and nothing to install. Open the page and start editing on any computer, tablet or phone with a modern browser.

Is there a free online photo editor with no watermark?

Yes. This editor never adds a watermark, logo or text to your images, and downloads are full quality at the size you choose.

Can I use the edited images commercially?

Yes. The editor claims no rights over your images. You remain responsible for having the rights to the photos, fonts and other content you use.

Does it work on my phone or tablet?

Yes. On phones the image sits on top with a scrollable tool bar and a collapsible panel underneath. You can pinch to zoom, drag with two fingers to pan and use the full-screen button for more room.

Editing tools

How do I crop an image online?

Open your image, choose Crop & rotate, pick a ratio such as 1:1 or 16:9 (or Free), drag the frame and its handles over the part you want to keep, then press Apply crop or Enter.

How do I resize an image without losing quality?

Use the Resize tool and keep the aspect ratio locked. Making an image smaller keeps it sharp because the editor resamples with a Lanczos-3 filter. Enlarging cannot add real detail, so for bigger sizes use Enhance > Upscale, which interpolates and sharpens cleanly.

How do I resize a photo for Instagram, YouTube or LinkedIn?

In Crop & rotate, open Social media size and choose the platform format, for example Instagram portrait (1080×1350) or YouTube thumbnail (1280×720). Position the frame and apply: the image is cropped to the right shape and resized to the exact pixel size.

How do I straighten a crooked photo?

Open Crop & rotate and move the Straighten slider until the horizon looks level. The photo is rotated and zoomed just enough to hide empty corners.

Can I undo changes?

Yes. Undo and Redo work for every edit (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z, or ⌘ on a Mac). The editor keeps up to 60 steps, fewer for very large images to protect your device's memory.

How do I compare before and after?

Press Compare in the top bar (or the backslash key). Drag the slider on the image to see the original on the left and your edit on the right.

How do layers work?

Every image, text, shape, sticker, drawing and overlay is a separate layer. In the Layers panel you can reorder, hide, lock, rename, duplicate, merge and delete layers and set each layer's opacity and blend mode.

Background removal

How do I remove the background from an image?

Open the Background tool and press Remove background, or go straight to Replace background. The editor finds the colours around the edges of your photo, including gradients and two-tone backdrops, and makes them transparent. Then use the magic eraser to click away leftover areas, and the restore brush to paint back anything removed by mistake. Download as PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.

Does the background remover use AI?

No. It is colour-based and runs on your device, which keeps your photos private. It works very well on product shots, logos, signatures, scans and portraits against a plain or evenly lit backdrop. For busy outdoor backgrounds an AI segmentation model would do better; that requires downloading a large model or a server and is not part of this tool.

How do I make a transparent PNG?

Remove the background (or erase parts of the image), keep the canvas background set to Transparent, then export as PNG, WebP or AVIF. JPG does not support transparency and fills those areas with a colour you choose.

Can I replace the background with another colour or photo?

Yes. Open Background and choose Replace background with a photo, a colour or transparency. If your photo still has its original background, the editor cuts it out first and then puts the new background behind your subject, in one step. Choosing another background later swaps it instead of stacking a second one.

Enhance & quality

How do I enhance a photo online?

Open Enhance and press Auto enhance. It corrects the levels of each colour channel, lifts shadows slightly and adds vibrance and light sharpening. Every change stays editable in Adjust, so you can fine-tune or undo it.

Can I increase the resolution of an image?

You can enlarge it 2× or 4× with Enhance > Upscale. This uses classical Lanczos interpolation with edge sharpening, which looks clean but cannot recreate detail that is not in the original. AI super-resolution, which guesses new detail, needs server-side processing and is not offered.

How do I reduce noise or grain in a photo?

Use the Noise reduction slider in Enhance (or Adjust > Detail). It averages only similar neighbouring pixels, so grain is smoothed while edges stay sharp. Zoom to 100% to judge the result.

Will editing reduce my image quality?

Not unless you choose to. Edits are applied to the original pixels at full resolution when you export. PNG and BMP are lossless; for JPG, WebP and AVIF a quality of 85–92% is usually indistinguishable from the original while being much smaller.

Export & formats

Which formats can I download?

PNG, JPG, WebP and BMP in every modern browser, and AVIF in browsers that can encode it (recent Chrome and Edge, for example). You can open JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP, AVIF, SVG and ICO files, and HEIC photos in Safari.

Which format should I choose?

Use JPG or WebP for photos you want to share, PNG for graphics, screenshots and anything with transparency, and AVIF for the smallest files if your browser supports it. The export window shows an estimated file size before you download.

How do I compress an image?

Press Export, choose JPG, WebP or AVIF and lower the quality slider while watching the estimated file size. Reducing the pixel size also shrinks the file. For many images, use Batch.

How do I convert images to a different format?

Open the image and export it in the new format, or use Batch to convert many files at once, for example PNG to JPG or JPG to WebP.

How does batch processing work?

Open the Batch tool, drop up to 200 images, choose resize, format, quality and basic edits such as rotation, brightness or grayscale, then press Process images. Files are handled one at a time on your device and can be downloaded separately or as one ZIP file.

Privacy & security

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Your images are opened, edited and saved entirely inside your browser on your own device. They are never sent to Entertainment Couch or anyone else, and the editor works even if you go offline after the page has loaded.

Is my photo's location or camera data kept?

No. Downloads contain only the image pixels. EXIF metadata such as GPS location, camera model and date is not written to the exported file.

Is it safe to open files from the internet in the editor?

The editor checks each file's real type from its contents rather than its name, refuses non-image files and images with unsafe dimensions, and draws SVG files as pictures, so any scripts inside them never run.

Does the editor save my work?

Your edit stays open while the page is open. Closing or reloading the tab discards it (the browser will warn you first), so export your image when you are done. Saved filter presets are kept in this browser only.

Technical help

Which browsers are supported?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Samsung Internet and Opera on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad. JavaScript must be enabled.

What is the largest image I can edit?

Up to 100 MB per file and about 50 megapixels on computers. iPhones and iPads limit browser canvases to about 16.7 megapixels, so larger photos are scaled down automatically on those devices and the editor tells you when it does.

Why can't I open a HEIC photo?

Only Safari can decode HEIC images. On other browsers, convert the photo to JPG first, or set your iPhone camera to Most Compatible so it saves JPG files.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

Yes: Ctrl+Z undo, Ctrl+Shift+Z redo, V select, C crop, B brush, E eraser, I colour picker, W magic eraser, H or Space to pan, [ and ] brush size, Delete to remove a layer, Ctrl+D duplicate, arrow keys to nudge, 0 to fit, 1 for 100%, backslash to compare and Ctrl+E to export.

Is the editor accessible?

Tools, sliders and buttons have text labels and work with a keyboard, the tool bar follows the tab pattern for screen readers, focus is always visible and animations respect your reduced-motion setting. Precise drawing on the canvas still needs a pointer.
