Word Quest is a free online word game where you uncover a hidden word one guess at a time. Play your daily word puzzle, then keep going with unlimited practice in four word lengths and three difficulty levels — no sign-up required.
How to Play Word Quest
Word Quest is a free word puzzle you can play online in seconds. Your goal is to find the hidden word in as few guesses as possible.
- Enter a guess. Type a real English word with the right number of letters, using your keyboard or the on-screen keys, then press Enter.
- Read the clues. Each letter tile flips to reveal one of three results.
- Refine and repeat. Use what you learned to make a smarter next guess. Solve it within six attempts to win.
- Correct position — the letter is in the word and in the right spot.
- Wrong position — the letter is in the word, but somewhere else.
- Not present — the letter does not appear in any remaining spot.
Words can contain repeated letters. If you guess a letter twice but the answer only has it once, only one of your tiles will light up.
How Repeated Letters Are Scored
Many answers use the same letter twice, so it helps to know exactly how clues work for duplicates. Word Quest checks your guess in two passes:
- Letters in exactly the right spot are marked correct position first.
- Each remaining letter is marked wrong position only while the answer still has an unmatched copy of it. Extra copies are marked not present.
For example, if the answer is abide and you guess speed, only the first E lights up as wrong position, because the answer contains a single E. If you guess eerie against crane, the final E is marked correct and the earlier Es are marked not present. The on-screen keyboard always shows the strongest clue you have found for each letter.
Daily Word Challenge
The Daily Challenge is a five letter word game with one new puzzle per day. Every new player starts at Challenge #1 and moves on to the next challenge each day they play, with a new daily word puzzle unlocking every night at midnight Eastern Time.
Win on consecutive days to build your streak, then share your result as a spoiler-free grid of colored squares. Your finished board stays available for review, and your daily history keeps a record of every puzzle you have played.
Unlimited Word Guessing Practice
Want more than one puzzle a day? Practice Mode turns Word Quest into an unlimited 5 letter word guessing game — and more. Start a new game whenever you like and customize it:
- Word length: 4, 5, 6, or 7 letters.
- Easy: everyday vocabulary, with up to two optional hints per game.
- Normal: a mix of common and moderately challenging words.
- Hard: no hints, and every clue you reveal must be used in later guesses.
- Attempts: from four to eight guesses.
Practice statistics are tracked separately, so experimenting never affects your Daily Challenge streak. Wins that used hints are marked as assisted.

Benefits of Playing Word Puzzles
Word puzzles are a quick, low-pressure way to give your brain a workout during a coffee break. A daily word challenge encourages you to:
- Grow your vocabulary by meeting words you rarely use.
- Practice logical reasoning as you combine clues and eliminate possibilities.
- Build spelling awareness by thinking about common letter patterns.
- Enjoy a healthy routine — a few focused minutes a day that you can share with friends and family.
Most of all, they are fun. Like the best brain games online, Word Quest is made for short, satisfying sessions — a free word game online you can finish in a few minutes.
Word Guessing Strategies
- Open with variety. A first guess with two or three different vowels and common consonants such as R, S, T, L, and N reveals the most information.
- Lock in what you know. Keep correct letters in place and try lilac letters in new positions.
- Don't waste letters. Avoid letters already marked as not present unless you are deliberately testing something.
- Remember repeats. Words like lever or stats use the same letter twice — consider doubles when you're stuck.
- Think in patterns. Common endings such as -ER, -LY, and -CH, and beginnings such as ST-, CH-, and TR-, can unlock a tough puzzle.
Frequently Asked Questions
A word guessing game is a puzzle where you try to identify a hidden word using a limited number of guesses. After each guess you get clues about which letters are in the word and where they belong, so every attempt narrows down the answer.
Type any valid word with the right number of letters and press Enter. Each tile then shows a clue: a purple tile means the letter is in the correct position, a light lilac tile means the letter is in the word but in a different spot, and a dark gray tile means the letter is not in the word. Use those clues to solve the puzzle within six attempts.
