What can you do with this photo watermark maker?

You can create text watermarks, logo watermarks and repeating patterns, combine several of them on one photo, reuse them as templates, and apply them to a whole batch of images with consistent size and placement.

Text watermarks

Any text in any language, on one or several lines, with 24 fonts or your own uploaded font. Bold, italic, alignment, letter spacing, shadow, outline and a rounded background box.

Logo watermarks

Upload a PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG logo. Transparent backgrounds are kept, SVG logos stay sharp at any size, and Recolor turns any logo into a solid white or black mark.

Tiled watermark patterns

Repeat text or a logo diagonally or horizontally across the entire image, with adjustable angle, spacing and a brick offset, so the mark can’t simply be cropped out.

Precise positioning

Nine presets, margins in pixels or percent, exact X and Y values, drag and drop with center snapping, arrow-key nudging, and pinch or twist on touch screens.

Layers, undo and templates

Reorder, duplicate, hide, lock and delete layers. Undo and redo every change. Save complete watermark setups as templates, and export them to a file for another device.

Batch watermarking

Adaptive scaling sizes each watermark relative to each photo, so portrait, landscape, small and large images all get the same look. Download everything as one ZIP.

Smart placement

The tool measures the amount of detail in each part of your photo and suggests the calmest corner. Auto-place does this for every image in a batch. Match contrast picks white or black for legibility.

Before and after

Drag a comparison slider across the preview to see the original and the watermarked version side by side before you download.

What opacity, size and position work best for a watermark?

For most photos, an opacity of 40% to 70%, a width of about 15% to 25% of the image, and a corner position with a small margin look professional without hiding the subject. For proofs you want to protect strongly, use a tiled pattern at 15% to 30% opacity.

UseOpacitySizePosition
Social media and portfolios40–70%Logo 15–25% of width, text about 4–6%Bottom right or bottom left, 2–4% margin
Client proofs15–30%Medium, repeatedDiagonal tiled pattern
Stock or licensing previews25–45%LargeCenter or tiled across the subject
Product photos for a store30–60%Small logoA corner that doesn’t touch the product
Documents and screenshots10–25%Large text such as “CONFIDENTIAL”Diagonal, centered or tiled

Tips for a watermark that protects without distracting

  • Keep contrast, not brightness. A white mark with a soft shadow reads on almost any photo. Press Match contrast to let the tool pick white or black from the background.
  • Place it where it’s hard to crop. A corner mark can be cropped off. Moving it slightly toward the subject, or adding a faint tiled layer, makes removal much harder.
  • Use adaptive scaling for batches. It sizes the watermark relative to each photo’s shorter side, so a 1080 px phone photo and a 6000 px camera photo get the same proportions.
  • Check at 100%. Set Zoom to 100% to see exactly how the watermark will look in the downloaded file.
  • Save it as a template. Once you like a look, save it and apply it in one click next time.

How do you batch watermark photos?

Add all your photos at once, design the watermark on any one of them, and press Download all as ZIP. The same layers are applied to every ticked image, and adaptive scaling keeps the size and margins consistent on photos of different dimensions.

  • Select several files in the file picker, or drop a group of photos onto the tool. They appear as thumbnails below the preview.
  • Click any thumbnail to preview the watermark on that photo. Untick a thumbnail to leave that image out of the download.
  • Turn on Auto-place on every image if you want each photo’s watermark moved to its calmest corner.
  • Press Download all as ZIP. A progress bar shows each image, and you can cancel at any time. Photos are processed one at a time to keep memory use low.

There is no limit on the number of images. Very large batches of high-resolution photos simply take longer, and the speed depends on your device.

Does adding a watermark reduce image quality?

No visible quality is lost when you export at the original size with PNG, or with JPG or WebP at a quality of 92 or higher. The output keeps the original width and height unless you choose a smaller resolution, and EXIF rotation from phones and cameras is applied so photos are never sideways.

FormatBest forTransparencyFile size
JPGPhotos for social media, email and websitesNo. Transparent areas are filled with a color you chooseSmall
PNGGraphics, screenshots, logos and archivingYesLargest, lossless
WebPWebsites and online storesYesSmallest at the same quality. Not available for export in Safari

Every export is re-encoded by your browser, which removes camera metadata such as GPS location, device model and date. That is usually good for privacy, but keep your originals if you need that information. Colors are saved in the standard sRGB color space.

Is it safe to watermark photos online?

With this tool, yes. Your photos and logos are read and processed entirely inside your web browser. They are never uploaded, stored on a server or seen by anyone else, which makes the tool safe for client work, unreleased products and personal photos.

Many online watermark tools send your images to a server and send back the result. This one works differently: the watermarking engine runs in the page using the HTML canvas, and the finished file is created on your device. Templates you save are kept in your browser’s own storage and are never synced anywhere.

Uploaded SVG logos are cleaned before use. Scripts, event handlers, embedded web pages and links to outside files are removed, and the logo is then drawn as a plain image.

Your original files are never changed. Every download is a new copy with “-watermarked” added to the file name, which you can change in Export settings.

What are the limits of watermarking in a browser?

The tool has no artificial limits, but your browser and device do. Very large images may exceed the maximum canvas size a browser allows, phones have less memory than computers, and a few formats can only be opened by certain browsers. When a limit is reached, the tool tells you what happened instead of failing silently.

  • Maximum image size. Desktop browsers usually handle images up to about 16,000 pixels on a side. iPhone and iPad Safari allow about 16.7 megapixels per canvas. If a photo is bigger, the tool exports it at the largest size the browser allows and says so under the preview.
  • HEIC photos. iPhone HEIC files open only in Safari. In other browsers, set your iPhone camera to “Most Compatible” or export the photo as JPG first.
  • WebP export in Safari. Safari can open WebP images but can’t create them, so the WebP option is disabled there.
  • Animated GIFs. Only the first frame is watermarked, and the result is a still image.
  • Metadata. EXIF, GPS and color profiles are not copied to the exported file. Wide-gamut photos are converted to sRGB.
  • Web fonts. The designer fonts are loaded from Google Fonts the first time you pick one. Offline, a similar system font is used. Fonts you upload yourself always work offline.
  • Letter spacing. Older browsers without canvas letter-spacing support can’t space right-to-left scripts such as Arabic, which would break their letter joining.

Key terms in image watermarking

Short definitions of the ideas behind the tool and its settings.

Watermark
Visible text or a logo placed on an image to show ownership, credit the creator or discourage unauthorized use.
Opacity
How solid the watermark looks. 100% hides what is behind it completely, 0% makes it invisible.
Tiled watermark
A watermark repeated in a grid or diagonal pattern across the whole image, so it can’t be cropped away.
Adaptive scaling
Sizing the watermark as a percentage of each image’s shorter side, so it looks the same on images of different sizes.
Blend mode
How the watermark’s colors mix with the photo. Multiply darkens, Screen lightens, Overlay and Soft light add contrast.
EXIF orientation
A tag cameras and phones use to say which way a photo should be rotated. The tool applies it so the watermark lands on the correct side.
Transparent PNG
A PNG image with an alpha channel. Areas without content are see-through, which is ideal for logo watermarks.
Lossless and lossy
PNG keeps every pixel exactly (lossless). JPG and WebP discard detail the eye barely notices (lossy) to make files smaller.

About the Add Watermark to Image tool

Who makes the tool, exactly how it creates your files, and the standards it follows.

Who made it

Add Watermark to Image is designed and maintained by Entertainment Couch, which publishes a collection of free online tools and free browser games. It was last updated on .

How the engine works

  • Each photo is decoded by your browser, which applies its EXIF orientation. The preview and the download are drawn by the same rendering code on an HTML canvas [1], so the file matches what you see.
  • Every watermark layer is rendered once at the output resolution, including its shadow, outline and background, and then drawn onto the photo with your opacity, rotation and blend mode. The result is merged into the image pixels.
  • Large downscales, such as a 24-megapixel photo shown in the preview or exported at 50%, use repeated halving before the final resize to avoid jagged edges.
  • Smart placement measures the brightness changes across a small copy of the photo and compares the nine standard positions, with a penalty for the center, where the subject usually is.
  • Batch downloads are packed into a standard ZIP archive [3] in a background worker. Images are stored without recompression, so ZIP packing adds no quality loss.

Frequently asked questions

Search, or pick a topic. Text and logo watermarks, transparency, batch processing, quality and privacy.

How do I add a watermark to a photo for free?

Open this page, drop your photo onto the tool, press Add text or Add logo, adjust the look and position, and press Download this image. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no watermark of our own added to your photo.

Can I add a watermark without signing up?

Yes. There is no account, email or app install. Everything works as soon as the page loads.

Does the tool add its own watermark or logo?

No. The only watermarks on your exported images are the ones you add. There is no branding, no paid upgrade and no limit on downloads.

Can I watermark photos on my iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. Open the page in Safari or Chrome, tap Choose images and pick photos from your library. Drag the watermark with one finger, and pinch or twist with two fingers to resize or rotate it. On phones you can also tap Share or save to Photos to save the result directly.

Can I put more than one watermark on an image?

Yes. Add as many text and logo layers as you like. Reorder them with the arrow buttons, hide or lock them, duplicate them, and edit each one separately.

Can someone remove my watermark?

A visible watermark discourages copying and credits you, but no visible watermark is impossible to remove. A small corner mark is the easiest to crop. A semi-transparent mark over the subject, or a tiled pattern across the whole image, is much harder to remove cleanly.

How do I add a text watermark to an image?

Press Add text, then type your text in the Watermark text box. Choose a font, color, size and opacity, and drag the text to where you want it or pick a position preset. Press Enter in the text box to add a second line.

How do I add a copyright symbol to my photo?

The default text starts with ©, so you can simply replace the name. You can also type © on a Mac with Option+G, on Windows with Alt+0169, or copy it from here: ©.

Which fonts can I use?

There are 24 built-in fonts, including classic system fonts, designer fonts such as Montserrat, Playfair Display and a handwritten signature style, and Noto fonts for many languages. You can also upload your own TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2 brand font. It stays on your device.

Can I watermark in Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese or other languages?

Yes. Any Unicode text works. Right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew are detected automatically, and you can force the direction under Text direction. For the best results choose the matching Noto font for that script.

How do I make text readable on any background?

Turn on Drop shadow or Outline, or add a Background box behind the text. You can also press Match contrast, which measures the brightness behind the watermark and switches to white or black.

How do I add my logo to a photo?

Press Add logo and choose your logo file. It appears in a corner of the photo. Resize it with the size slider or the corner handle, set the opacity, and drag it into place.

Why does my logo have a white box around it?

Your logo file has a solid background. Use a PNG, WebP or SVG version with a transparent background. Transparent areas are always kept, so only the logo itself appears on the photo.

Can I make my logo white or black?

Yes. Turn on Recolor logo and pick a color. The logo becomes one solid color while keeping its shape and transparency, which is the classic look for photo watermarks.

Are SVG logos supported?

Yes. SVG logos stay perfectly sharp at any size. For security, scripts, links and embedded content are removed from the SVG before it is used.

How do I make a watermark transparent?

Use the Opacity slider. 100% is fully solid and 0% is invisible. Around 40% to 70% suits most corner watermarks, and 15% to 30% suits tiled patterns.

How do I watermark many photos at once?

Add all the photos together, design the watermark on one of them, then press Download all as ZIP. The same watermark is applied to every ticked photo and they are saved in one ZIP file.

Will the watermark look the same on photos of different sizes?

Yes, with Adaptive scaling turned on, which is the default. The watermark size and margin are set as a percentage of each photo’s shorter side, so they look consistent on portrait, landscape, small and large images.

Is there a limit on how many images I can watermark?

No. You can add as many images as your device can handle. Photos are processed one at a time, so even large batches work, they just take longer.

Can I leave some photos out of the batch?

Yes. Untick the checkbox on any thumbnail to skip it, or remove it with the × button.

Can I save my watermark settings for next time?

Yes. Open Templates, type a name and press Save. A template stores every layer, logo, font and export setting in your browser. Use Export templates to move them to another browser or device.

Will watermarking reduce my photo’s resolution?

No. Images are exported at their original width and height unless you choose a smaller size in Export. Only browsers with a canvas size limit, mainly iPhone and iPad, may need to export very large images smaller, and the tool tells you when that happens.

Which format should I download?

Choose JPG for photos you will post or email, PNG when you need perfect quality or transparency, and WebP for websites, where it gives the smallest files.

Is the watermark really part of the image?

Yes. The watermark is drawn into the image pixels before the file is saved, so it shows up in every app and website and can’t be switched off like an overlay.

Does the downloaded image match the preview?

Yes. The preview and the download use the same rendering code, with the download drawn at full resolution. Set Zoom to 100% to inspect fine detail before saving.

Are sideways phone photos handled correctly?

Yes. Phones often store photos sideways with an EXIF rotation tag. The tool applies that rotation, so the photo and the watermark are the right way up in the download.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Your photos and logos are processed entirely in your browser and never leave your device.

Does the tool keep my GPS location in the downloaded photo?

No. The exported file is newly encoded by your browser and does not include EXIF metadata such as GPS location, camera model or date.

Where are my templates stored?

In your browser’s own storage on this device. They are not uploaded or synced. Clearing your browser data deletes them, so export them to a file if you want a backup.

Does the tool work offline?

Yes, once the page has loaded. The only things that need a connection are the designer web fonts the first time you choose them. System fonts and fonts you upload work offline.

Which browsers are supported?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Samsung Internet and Opera on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad. JavaScript must be turned on.

Why can’t I open my HEIC photo?

Only Safari can open HEIC images. Open this page in Safari, or export the photo as JPG first. On iPhone you can set Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible to take JPG photos.

Why is WebP greyed out?

Your browser can’t create WebP files. This is the case in Safari. Choose JPG or PNG instead, or use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for WebP.

Can I use keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Ctrl+Z or ⌘Z undoes, Ctrl+Shift+Z or Ctrl+Y redoes, Ctrl+D duplicates the selected layer, Delete removes it, and arrow keys move it by one pixel, or ten with Shift.

Is the tool accessible?

Yes. Every setting can be changed with a keyboard and has a text label, layers can be selected from a list, position presets and X and Y fields replace dragging, and animations are reduced when your device asks for reduced motion.
