General
Is this PDF editor free?
Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no watermark, no page limit and no paid version. Everything runs in your own browser, so there are no server costs to pass on to you.
Do I need to create an account or install anything?
No. Open the page, add your PDF and start editing. There is nothing to register and nothing to install.
What can I do with this PDF editor?
You can change the existing text, add new text, recognise text on scanned pages with OCR, highlight, white out, redact, draw, add shapes, arrows, images and signatures, find and replace words, and rotate, reorder, duplicate, delete or insert pages. When you're done, save it as a new PDF.
How do I edit a PDF online?
Click Open and choose your PDF, or drop it onto the editor. Click any line of text and type to change it, or pick a tool from the toolbar to add text, highlights, shapes or a signature. Press Save PDF to download the edited copy.
Which files can I open?
PDF files, plus PNG, JPG and WebP images. An image opens as a one-page document, so you can run text recognition on a photo of a page and edit it like a PDF.
Can I use it on my phone or tablet?
Yes. It works on Android phones, iPhones, iPads and tablets, as well as Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook computers. On a phone, use the Pages button at the top left and the Style button at the end of the toolbar to open the side panels.
Which browsers does it work in?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. If something doesn't work, update your browser first; very old browsers can't run the PDF and text recognition engines.
Is there a file size or page limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, very large files depend on how much memory your device has. Documents with hundreds of pages open fine on a computer; on a phone, very large scanned files can be slow.
Does it work without an internet connection?
You need a connection to load the page. The text recognition engine and its language data also download the first time you recognise a scan, and your browser usually keeps them for later. Your PDF itself is never sent over the connection.
Can I merge several PDFs into one?
Yes. Open the first PDF, then use Add pages from file in the Pages panel to add more PDFs or images to the end. Rearrange the pages if needed and press Save PDF to get one combined file.
Is it a full replacement for Adobe Acrobat?
It covers the everyday jobs: editing text, filling in details, signing, highlighting, redacting and organising pages. It doesn't fill interactive form fields, edit tables as tables, add bookmarks or apply certified digital signatures.
Can I convert my PDF to Word instead?
This page edits and saves PDFs. To get an editable Word (.docx) file, use our free PDF text extractor and converter tools, which also read scanned pages with OCR.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Yes. V select, T text, W whiteout, H highlight, X redact, R rectangle, E ellipse, L line, A arrow, D draw, I image, S signature. Ctrl+Z undo, Ctrl+Shift+Z or Ctrl+Y redo, Ctrl+F find and replace, Ctrl+S save, Ctrl+O open, Ctrl + and Ctrl - to zoom, Ctrl+0 to fit the width. Delete removes the selected item and the arrow keys nudge it (hold Shift for bigger steps). On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl.
Where can I find help while I'm editing?
Click Help in the top bar at any time to open these questions in a panel over your document, with search and categories, without losing your place.
Editing text
How do I edit the existing text in a PDF?
Click any line of text on the page and type. The original line is covered with a patch in the page's own background colour, and your new text is written on top in a matching size, weight and colour.
Why can't I click on the text in my PDF?
The page is probably a scan or a photo, so it contains a picture of text rather than real text. Press Recognize text to read the page with OCR; afterwards every line can be clicked and edited.
Is the original text removed when I edit it?
It is covered, not deleted, so it can still be found by copying or searching the saved file's text. If something must be removed for good, such as an account number, use the Redact tool instead.
Which fonts are used for edited text?
Edited text uses Helvetica, Times or Courier, whichever is closest to the original font, in the original size, weight and colour. Because PDFs often contain fonts that can't be reused, an edited line can look slightly different from the lines around it.
Can I change the font size, colour, bold, italic or alignment?
Yes. Select a line or text box and use the Properties panel to change the font, size, colour, bold, italic, alignment and letter spacing. On a phone, tap Style to open the panel.
How do I add new text to a PDF?
Choose the Text tool (T), click where you want the text and start typing. Text boxes wrap automatically; drag the handle on their right edge to change the width, and the move handle to reposition them.
Can I move or delete a line of existing text?
Yes. Select the line and drag its move handle to reposition it, or use the arrow keys to nudge it. To delete it, select it and press Delete or click Erase this line; it is covered with the background colour.
How do I undo a change to a line?
Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) to undo any step, or select the line and click Restore original to bring back the original text, style and position.
Can I find and replace words across the whole PDF?
Yes. Press Ctrl+F or click the magnifier in the toolbar. You can step through matches, replace one at a time or replace all, with an option to match upper and lower case. It works on recognised scans too.
Can I type in other languages and scripts?
Yes. Letters such as Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic or emoji, which the standard PDF fonts can't encode, are saved as a sharp, high-resolution image of the text so they still look right.
Scanned PDFs & OCR
Can I edit a scanned PDF?
Yes. Press Recognize text and the scan is read with OCR. Every recognised line keeps its position, size and ink colour, and becomes editable text you can change like any other line.
What is OCR?
OCR stands for optical character recognition. It looks at a picture of a page, finds the letters and words, and turns them into real text that you can edit, search and copy.
Which OCR engine does it use?
Tesseract, a widely used open-source text recognition engine. It runs inside your browser, so your pages are read on your own device and are never uploaded.
Which languages can the OCR read?
English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Chinese (Simplified) and Japanese. Pick the language under Text recognition in the Properties panel before you start.
Will my saved scan be searchable?
Yes, if Make scanned pages searchable is ticked (it is by default). An invisible text layer is added behind each recognised page, so you can search and copy its text in any PDF reader.
Pages
How do I rearrange pages?
Drag a page thumbnail in the Pages panel to a new position, or use the up and down arrows that appear on the thumbnail. On a phone, tap Pages to open the panel.
How do I rotate a page?
Use the rotate buttons on the page's thumbnail. Rotation is kept when you save, and your edits rotate with the page.
How do I delete or duplicate a page?
Use the bin or copy button on the page's thumbnail. A deleted page can be brought back with Undo.
Can I add a blank page?
Yes. Click Insert blank page in the Pages panel. It is added after the page you're viewing, at the same size, and you can type, draw or sign on it.
Can I add pages from another PDF or an image?
Yes. Click Add pages from file and choose one or more PDFs or images; their pages are added to the end of your document.
Annotate & sign
How do I highlight text in a PDF?
Choose Highlight (H) and drag across the text. The colour blends with the text underneath, like a real highlighter, and you can pick a different colour in the Properties panel.
How do I white out part of a PDF?
Choose Whiteout (W) and drag over the area. The box takes the surrounding background colour, so it blends in on tinted or off-white pages too.
How do I sign a PDF?
Choose Signature (S), then draw your signature with your mouse, finger or stylus, or type your name to get a handwritten style. Click Place signature, then drag and resize it into position.
Can I add images or a logo to a PDF?
Yes. Choose Insert image (I) and pick a picture. Drag the corners to resize it; it keeps its proportions unless you hold Shift.
Can I draw on a PDF?
Yes. Choose Draw (D) and draw freehand with your mouse, finger or stylus. Set the colour, thickness and opacity in the Properties panel.
Redaction
How do I redact a PDF?
Choose Redact (X) and drag black boxes over the text or images you want to hide. When you save, every page with a redaction is flattened, so the content underneath is permanently removed rather than just hidden.
What's the difference between Whiteout and Redact?
Whiteout covers content with a matching colour, but the original text is still in the file. Redact removes it for good by flattening the page into an image when you save. Use Redact for anything confidential.
Privacy & storage
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your PDF is opened, edited, recognised and saved entirely inside your browser, on your own device. The page downloads its tools from public code libraries, but your document is never sent anywhere.
Where can I see documents I edited before?
Click Recent in the editor. Every document you open is saved in your browser automatically with all its edits, so you can reopen it later and keep editing. The start screen also lists your last four.
Saving & compatibility
How do I save my edited PDF?
Press Save PDF (or Ctrl+S), check the file name and click Save PDF again. The new PDF downloads to your device; the original file is never changed.
Will the saved PDF open in other programs?
Yes. It is a standard PDF that opens in Adobe Acrobat and Reader, Preview on Mac, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and PDF apps on phones.
Can I save just the text?
Yes. In the save window, choose Save text only (.txt) to download all the text, including recognised scans, page by page.
Troubleshooting
My PDF is password protected. Can I edit it?
Not directly. Open it in your PDF reader with the password, save or print an unprotected copy, and open that copy here.
The editor is slow with a big file. What helps?
Close other tabs, zoom out, and recognise scanned pages a few at a time. On a phone, very large scans are easier to handle on a computer.
Tips
How do I get the best results from a scan?
Scan at 300 dpi if you can, keep the page flat and straight, and use good, even light. Black text on white paper gives the most accurate results.
How do I fill in a PDF form that has no fields?
Choose the Text tool, click on each blank line and type your answer. Adjust the size in the Properties panel so it fits, then add your signature and save.
No questions match your search. Try a different word, such as "scan", "sign" or "save".
