Tic tac toe takes only nine squares to create a surprisingly interesting challenge. Each turn asks you to do two things: look for your own line of three and stop the other player from making one first. If you want to play tic tac toe online but have never learned the rules, you can get started in a minute.
The board and the goal
A standard tic tac toe game uses a three-by-three grid. One player marks empty squares with X and the other uses O. X moves first, and players take turns placing one mark in any empty square. You cannot move a mark after placing it or use a square that is already occupied.
The first player to make three of their marks in a straight line wins. A line may be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. There are eight possible winning lines: three rows, three columns, and two diagonals. If all nine squares are filled and neither player has made a line, the game is a draw.
These rules apply whether you call it tic tac toe, tic-tac-toe, or tictactoe. The spelling changes, but the familiar three-by-three game does not.
Start by reading the open lines
On your first turn, you have a choice of a corner, an edge, or the center. The center belongs to four possible winning lines. Each corner belongs to three, and each edge belongs to two. That makes the center and corners useful places to consider, although a good move later in the game always depends on what your opponent has already played.
After the first move, stop thinking only about individual squares. Look at the rows, columns, and diagonals that are still open to you. A line containing your mark and an empty square may become useful. A line containing both X and O cannot become a three-in-a-row for either player.
Follow a short turn-by-turn checklist
Before placing your mark, ask three questions. Can I complete a line of three right now? If so, take that winning square. Can my opponent complete a line of three on the next turn? If so, block the open square unless you can win immediately. If neither player has an immediate win, can I make a move that gives me more than one promising line?
This order matters. A clever setup is not helpful if you overlook an available win or allow your opponent to finish a line first. When you play tic tac toe, spending a few seconds on these checks is usually enough to avoid the simplest mistakes.
Understand why some games end in a draw
A draw is a normal result in tic tac toe online. When both players defend correctly, neither can force a win in the standard game. A drawn board does not mean the round was pointless; it often means both players spotted and answered the immediate threats.
